The day started with Sammy and Conan leading off the first leg in cool and clear conditions (NO RAIN). Out past the Big Banana - where choc coated bananas are a delicacy - through banana groves on our way north. The boys pushed things along and very soon the second pairing of Steve A and Andy hit the road.
The country side around this area is quite picturesque with bananas, sugar cane and semi tropical vegetation. Along the way we had people dropping off donations to the team, and they were very interested in hearing about the cause and what we are up to. The word is spreading about the ride with articles and photos in local papers and radio. Members of the team have been kept busy with radio interviews, people on the road are telling us that they heard about the ride on radio or saw the Sunday Today Show.
Mark and Steve M had their turn on the bike and pushed along at a reasonable pace as the temperature increased. Haven’t seen too much wildlife so far but have smelt the results of the demise of some.
The day just got better with a few hills but then long stretches beside the rivers. Along the way we met up with Andy’s partner Lisa who made up some rolls and bits for lunch (thanks Leese). Lisa joined the crew for Andy and Steves' next stint which wound out of the hills around Grafton.
Steve M and Mark headed off for the final leg and were cruising down the road, when next minute the eloquent tones of John Holland from Caribou were heard in the distance as the PA car approached. The Caribou crew arrived to escort us into Tweed Heads and the Ford dealership, Victory Ford the finish of the day’s riding
We met up with Ted and the crew at the end of the day and Ted relayed a story of a bloke he met in Cavell Ave. The guy’s father has recently died from prostate cancer and the son requested that instead of flowers, the mourners donate to the E J Whitten Foundation.
A quick meal then off to Nanango for the next day’s riding, at least we gained an hour entering Qld.
