Red Team left our accom in Hahndorf and travelled the relatively short distance to Meningie for the start of our next stage and last overnight section. Meningie is just next to the Coorong where the Murray river enters the sea, there are some spectacular views along this section, sometimes this is balanced by the gentle odour of rotting seaweed which was blown up against the shoreline.

About half way through the second pair of riders we came upon the Coorong Waters “restaurant” and licensed grocers in the tiny hamlet of Policeman’s Point. The stop here was worth it for the great feed, Lisa had a plate of local mullet you could barely jump over. On the road again and dusk was approaching. The road undulates along beside the sand dunes for miles before leaving the Coorong after Kingston SE ( Not sure what the SE is for, must look that up too). Heading across the country for Mt Gambier the course traverses a multitude of farmland properties.

It’s well and truly dark and the only clues to the types of properties are the sounds and smells. While doing a rider change there is a constant but quiet sound of sheep in the background. Further along the smell of freshly cut hay dominates the air, a few miles on and the unmistakable odour that emanates from a dairy fills the air. Something I hadn’t experienced since my holidays as a kid in East Gippsland, funny how the senses remember certain things. Back to the ride!

With the favourable conditions we are making good time and roll into Mt Gambier a couple of hours early, head for the Limestone Coast Caravan Park and bed.

One more ride and we are home!
