Here they come: The fire-fighters from the Melbourne Fire Brigade ride into the MCG to complete their 15,000 26 day trek around Australia – great job fellas!Amid cheers and applause, the 12 Melbourne based fire fighters who gave up a month of their annual leave, returned home yesterday as the inaugural HOSTPLUS Pedal for Prostate charity ride around Australia reached its climax.
After 26 days on the road, circumnavigating 15,000km of Australian countryside, the 12 riders and 22 support crew were met with a huge welcoming party at the MCG.
Mark O’Connor’s Red team and David Doherty’s Blues pedaled to the MCG as one unit from Werribee over the final 35km, although they were met with torrential rain as they crossed the city limits. Thankfully the rain eased as they cruised the final few kilometers.
A number of dignitaries, representing major sponsors were at the MCG to greet the riders, including Wayne Sullivan (HOSTPLUS), Peter Burnett (Australian Hotel Association), Geoff Parker (Carlton and United Breweries) and Ted Whitten jnr (Whitten Foundation).
Whitten had a key role with the tour as he enjoyed the company of the riders and the support crew as they travelled the country.
